Despite their tiny size, hummingbird eggs are quite tough and difficult to break. The reason for this is that they need to be able to withstand being incubated by their mother, who must sit on them for long periods of time without crushing them.

Did you know that hummingbird eggs are a very light blue color? In fact, they are so light that they almost appear to be white. The eggs are small as well, measuring only about 3/4 of an inch in length.

What Birds Lay Tiny Blue Eggs?

There are many different types of birds that lay tiny blue eggs, including but not limited to Bluebirds, robins, wrens, and finches.

The shells of bluebird eggs are thin and fragile, so they must be incubated carefully. Robins typically lay three to five eggs at a time, which are a light blue color with brown spots.

Wrens usually lay between four and eight eggs per clutch, and their eggs are pale blue with brown streaks. Lastly, finches generally lay two to six eggs per clutch, and their eggs can be any shade of blue from light to dark.

All of these birds make excellent parents and will work diligently to incubate their young.

If you find a nest with tiny blue eggs in it, chances are good that the mother bird is still nearby and keeping watch over her precious cargo!

Hummingbird Facts And More About The Smallest Bird Species

Hummingbird Egg Weight

One of the many questions we get here at the Audubon Society is “How much does a hummingbird egg weigh?”. The answer may seem quite simple, but there is actually a range depending on the species of hummingbird.

For example, the calliope hummingbird has the smallest eggs, which only weigh 0.04 ounces (1.51 grams).

On the other end of the spectrum, the giant bee hummingbird has eggs that can weigh up to 0.11 ounces (4.16 grams) – about 3 times as big! The average size for all hummingbird eggs though is generally between 0.06-0.07 ounces (1.7-2 grams).

Why such a small egg? Well, part of it has to do with their metabolism which is incredibly high since they have to flap their wings so quickly to stay airborne – up to 80 times per second in some cases!

This means they need lots of energy and burn through calories very rapidly, which makes them unable to store fat as other animals can.

Their small size also helps them escape predators and survive cold weather since they have a large surface area relative to their body mass so heat escapes quickly.

So there you have it, now you know how much those tiny little hummingbird eggs weigh!

The eggs of a hummingbird are white and have a glossy finish. Hummingbird eggs are about the size of a jellybean, and they usually come in clutches of two. The female hummingbird incubates the eggs for about 18 days, and then the chicks hatch.
